SUNBURY – A Northumberland resident has launched a write-in campaign to be a Democratic challenger to Republican State Representative Lynda Schlegel-Culver. Deppen hopes to represent the 108th legislative district. John Deppen was a recent guest on WKOK’s On The Mark program, “I’m doing so because I’m a firm believer that voters deserve a choice no matter what the race is, no matter how popular the incumbent may be or how good of a job the incumbent may be doing.”
Deppen says there are few choices for Democrats in the upcoming primary election on April 26, “There is no Democrat running for state representative in this district. There is no Democrat running for state senator. There is no Democrat on the ballot running against Tom Marino. Democrats can’t complain, I don’t think. We forfit our right to complain about obstructionism at the state level and the federal level when we are not putting candidates forth for these offices, and that’s why I am stepping forward to run.”
Deppen describes himself as a liberal Democrat and says this is not a bad thing, “I’m a liberal Democrat. I’ve been a liberal Democrat for my entire life. As a matter of fact, this month marks 30 years that I first registered to vote.”
Deppen said, “I try to tell people that, what you have heard about liberal Democrats, and what you think you may know about liberal Democrats, may or may not be true. I’ve stood by those principles my entire life and I think that my accomplishments and my record of service to the community shows that you can be a liberal Democrat and be a patriotic American.” You can hear more from Deppen from WKOK’s On The Mark program online at www.wkok.com.
