NORTHUMBERLAND — The Borough of Northumberland held a service Monday to remember those who died serving our country. The parade included the Shikellamy JROTC and marching band, and it ended at the Riverview Cemetery where Northumberland native Lieutenant Colonel Reid Epler Furman addressed a crowd of about 150 people.
“We the people, remember today the price of freedom, and honor those who paid that price. Across the nation we set aside this day to honor those who gave what Lincoln called the last full measure of devotion.”
The ceremony also included students from Shikellamy School District who read the Gettysburg Address, sang patriotic songs, and concluded it by playing Taps.
During his speech Lieutenant Colonel Furman said the lessons American soldiers learn in small towns like Northumberland help them represent our nation as a positive force on the global stage. (Kory Kramer)
