SUNBURY—Northumberland County law enforcement will be cracking down on impaired driving during the upcoming holiday weekend. Police will be conducting random sobriety checkpoints throughout the county.
David Everly, regional coordinator for the DUI enforcement program says the goal is to reduce the number of impaired drivers and boaters, “I want to bring awareness at least people know that there is a problem to think twice, plus that we are going to be doing enforcement so they hopefully use better judgement and use a designated driver.”
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will also be conducting checkpoints on the river. An average of 50 people a year are arrested for boating under the influence. This offense can result in losing your boating license. In 2015, 345 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes on Pennsylvania roadways. (Jack Spaulding)
