New river observation platform could be coming to Sunbury

SUNBURY – Sunbury residents and visitors could soon have a new way of viewing the Susquehanna River along the flood wall. During a recent luncheon with Sunbury Revitalization Inc., Sunbury Pride and Renaissance Coalition said they envision an overlook platform to see the river.  Bob Zimmerman, SPARC member, says the idea first came up three years ago when Sunbury River Festival was still on Front Street, “We thought it would be a nice idea to have an overlook over the wall, so you can see the boats and the river and stuff flow by because we consider ourselves a river city.”

Zimmerman says the platform would be built similar to a boardwalk, but smaller. The observation deck would be approximately 70 feet by 40 feet. He says pending a few approvals, the overlook could be complete by next year, “We’re  just trying to dot “I’s” and cross “T’s” as far as the construction materials, and where we’re going to get the materials from. We’re trying to solicit donations of materials. We just have not gotten the feedback yet to say “let’s go ahead.” Hopefully this is a dream we could make come true by next spring.”

The proposed overlook would be somewhat similar to a platform along Front Street, near Julia Street. It allows visitors to see over the wall, and see ‘Shikellamy’s Profile’ on Blue Hill.
