New phone scam reported
MILTON – An area woman is the victim of a scam involving Publisher’s Clearing House. Authorities say the Milton woman was contacted by a man who told her she’d won a Mercedes-Benz and a $450,000 cash prize from Publisher’s Clearing House.
To receive the prizes, the caller told the woman to pay shipping and handling fees amounting to $1,115. The woman was told to put the amount on a “load card” and give the numbers to the caller over the phone giving him access to the funds immediately.
The victim said the caller was persistent and called her over the course of several days requesting additional money to secure her prizes. Police warn people to be on the look out for scams of this nature. (Jennifer Wakeman)
