More than 100 to clean up the Susquehanna

Susquehanna river, flood, marina, confluence, West, North, high waterSUNBURY – For the 4th year in a row, the annual Susquehanna River Cleanup will take place in Sunbury.  Organizer Zach Stotter of Sunbury Revitalization Incorporated says the event has grown each year, “It started off very small as an AmeriCorps project and it’s grown since then.  The first year we had 30 volunteers and now we are up to over 100.”

Stotter explained how the volunteers get the job done, “We clean up about seven miles of shoreline from Lewisburg to below Sunbury.  Some people go by kayak and we have boaters come along and pick up garbage.  We also have people work along the shorelines by foot, collecting scrap metal, trash and recycling.  We collect that all and dispose of it.

What kind of strange items do they find in the river?  “I would say refrigerators are up there just because of the size of them.  Two years ago, we pulled a set of four Brunswick bowling alley seats out.  That was a pretty interesting find.”

The Susquehanna River Cleanup is Saturday May 2 from 9 to noon.  To register and for more information, you can go to www.susquehannacleanup.com.  (Ali Stevens)
