Milton Man Scammed Out of $18,000 in Gift Cards

MILTON — A costly theft case in Milton. Mark Lawrence has that story:

A 78-year-old Milton man was scammed out of $18,000 after sending Apple gift cards to someone he met online. State police say the victim had been communicating through a messaging app called Zangi with a person using the name “Helena Charles.”

Over time, the scammer gained his trust and convinced him she planned to visit him in person. The victim bought dozens of $500 Apple gift cards and sent them to an address in Oklahoma City, then shared the card numbers and PINs electronically. Police say the man never met the person face-to-face.

Troopers are warning the public not to send money or gift cards to people they’ve only interacted with online, especially over unverified platforms. The case remains under investigation, and no arrests have been made at this time
