Miller Center beginning to take shape for 2017

SUNBURY – Work is underway on a new recreation facility in Lewisburg. The 92,000 square foot Miller Center is expected to be open in July 2017 at the Penn House Commons site.  Jim Mathias, executive director for the Miller Center, gave an update on construction on WKOK Sunrise Thursday.

Mathias said, “The site contract has been let and we are starting to see drainage systems and storm water management and grading being done on the site right now.  We just let the contract for the renovation project last week and they are going to begin next week.  So, if you go by Penn House Commons, you will see lots of activity from here on out.”

Mathias talked about what the Miller Center will offer to the community, “We see it as a place where the community can gather multi-generationally.  We’ve got plans and programs for kids from 5 to folks over 80.  We’ve got a state-of-the-art fitness center there.  We have four hard courts, a small turf area, an indoor -outdoor healthy-eating choice cafe, some child development space, and we are also leasing space to Evangelical Community Hospital for their orthopedic and physical therapy clinical practice.”

And he explained some of the indoor opportunities they are offering to local sports programs, “We have some partners as anchor-programs coming in, including a soccer program, North Union United, Bison Field Hockey and Next Level Strong Basketball.  They will all have their league and tournament and instructional gatherings there.”

Beth Miller is a Miller Center board member and talked about her family’s vision for the facility, “It started about four years ago and it was an idea and developed into a vision and from there it grew. For our family,

this is really an opportunity.  We see this project as, where our passion for play and recreation and wellness meets our purpose, our commitment to give back to the community in a meaningful way, so we are excited.  We’re excited to see this happen.  We are excited to be a part of the vision and to make that vision a reality.”

Patti Urosevich is also a board member and is excited for the future at the Miller Center, “I think there is so many diverse programming plans for this facility, for all age groups, that it offers just a great opportunity for community members to come together with health and wellness.”
