Mayor promises to get to the truth

sunburypoliceSUNBURY – The investigation into allegations against the Sunbury police department is leaving no stone unturned. Mayor David Persing said the city has subpoenaed cellphone records for city-owned phones. According to Persing, the subpoena is required by Verizon in order to release the information, “It’s the procedure question that we had to get a subpoena to go to Verizon to get the information that we’re looking for, so that whole thing was nothing more than just the proper legal procedure.”

Persing says he is committed to get to the truth of the accusations made about improper conduct on the part of a Sunbury officer, “The investigation is all said and done other than this last piece of it. I promised the people at the meeting that we would do everything in our power to verify whatever these accusations are, which I can’t talk about.”

Mayor Persing says there is no timetable for concluding the investigation, but he looks forward to making the results public and moving forward. Two officers were suspended in February after separate incidents. One officer was accused of using inappropriate language while on duty to a female county employee. The other officer was accused of using police equipment to meet a woman during work hours, who was outside of city limits. (Jennifer Wakeman)
