MONROE TOWNSHIP, SNYDER COUNTY – A Selinsgrove man is out nearly $40,000 after falling victim to a country music scam on social media.
Selinsgrove state police say the victim was contacted via Facebook Messenger by a scammer pretending to be country music star Gene Watson. Troopers say the victim was a loyal fan of Watson and was promised $250,000 cash for being such a loyal fan.
Troopers say the scammers asked for large sums of cash to multiple locations in return. Troopers say the victim then sent over $39,000 in cash and a $300 gift card between March and June 10 before reporting the scam to authorities. Troopers say they are still investigating.
