MacFarlane on GOP Debate: The Boos ‘Tell You Something’

WASHINGTON, D.C. – CBS News Congressional Correspondent Scott MacFarlane says the boos during Wednesday night’s GOP Debate ‘tell you something.’

He told WKOK’s On The Mark it all had to do with who was not at the debate – former president Donald Trump, “It felt like a substitute teacher walked into the room when they brought up Trump and it was unmistakable. It speaks to the moment we’re in now. That either speaks well or poorly for the former president, but it was noteworthy. Feels like its gonna last as long as Donald Trump is mentioned in any political discourse.”

MacFarlane says that also means it’s going to be difficult for more ‘presidential like’ candidates like Nikki Haley and Tim Scott to win the nomination, “It’s a different strategy than it would’ve been in the 1980s or 90s. You’re in a post-Trump Republican Party. You can’t do the traditional things and stand out as long as Trump is running the party.”

In other debate reaction, MacFarlane says Vivek Ramaswamy’s comments were ‘provocative’ and there are arguments for and against Chris Christie being a serious candidate for the nomination.
