Lycoming Co. Considers Exiting Landfill Business Due to Losses

WILLIAMSPORT — PennLive is Reporting….Lycoming County is considering exiting the landfill business due to financial struggles, as it’s no longer profitable.

County Commissioners Scott L. Metzger and Marc C. Sortman are exploring options, including hiring a management firm, creating an authority, leasing, or selling the facility, which serves nine counties.

Mya D. Toon, the county’s financial director, suggests the best choices are to either hire a management firm to turn it around or sell the property. The landfill has been running a cash deficit since 2022. The county also faces losses from a recycling program.

Discussions with other landfills have been held to help them understand what went wrong. The county is now reassessing its approach, as previous assumptions about the landfill’s profitability were mistaken.
