SUNBURY – Without the help of our local United Way, a North Carolina man wouldn’t finally be getting some higher education. 36-year-old Demetrius Brown shared his story during the Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way’s million-dollar campaign kickoff ceremony Tuesday.
“Right now I’m going to Lackawanna College in Sunbury that just started. I’m going for Business Administration. The end game is to go from there to Susquehanna (University), and then major in Communications/Sports Media. Then I want to be a TV Broadcast Journalist because I like to run my mouth, and if I can get paid to run my mouth, I might as well. Joanne, I just want to say from the bottom of my heart, ‘If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t be standing here right now. I appreciate you.”
Brown, nicknamed “Country,” says he left home to pursue his education to lift the burden off his mother. Brown says he’s one of five children. Still without a high school diploma, Brown says he started his GED last November.
He was introduced to United Way CEO Joanne Troutman who said he was the first participant in the United Way/CSIU GED scholarship program. For more information about our local United Way, visit gsvuw.org. (Matt Catrillo)
