LEWISBURG – “Unfortunetly,” residents in the Lewisburg School District can expect their taxes to rise. The Daily Item quotes the Lewisburg school board board president with that comment Thursday night. Property taxes in the next year will go up about a half-mill.

The board unanimously adopted a preliminary budget Thursday for the 2018-19 school year. School Board President Kathy Swope told The Daily Item increases in retirement, health care and special education costs were major factors in the decision. The increase is abut 2.8 percent or 0.48 mills.

The preliminary budget costs just under $36 million but that final version should drop before a final version is adopted ahead of the June 30 deadline. The current budget gap is $784,000. The school district had avoided taxes for the first time in five years last year when it adopted a budget of just over $34 million.
