LEWISBURG- Property tax has been increased for Lewisburg borough residents. Last night the borough council approved its 2017 budget which includes a 1 mill increase, bringing the rate up to 12.74 mills. The increase translates to approximately $100 more per $100,000 assessed property value.
The majority of the funds will be spent on fixing roads, on recreation and on fire service. In addition to $200,000 which will be used from the liquid fuels fund, the Borough plans to take out a loan in the amount of half, to three quarters of a million dollars in order to improve roadways.
Borough Manager William Lowthert explains, “Many of our roads, particularly our alleys, are in bad shape. We need to start looking at those to get them improved, and we felt this was the best way for us to be able to do that. By taking out a loan and doing it all in one big shot.”
The adopted general fund budget is approximately $3 million. The annual operating budget is approximately $4 million for 2017. (Ashley Thomas)
