SUNBURY — JROTC is turning 99-years-old — and they hope to celebrate with a record-breaking 5K. JROTC programs across the country and beyond will be holding 5K runs on April 25 — one of them in Sunbury.
Shikellamy Senior Army Instructor Joseph Walsh explains the initiative, “The JROTC’s across the United States and Europe — there are about 3,100 plus of us — we are all going to run a 5K on the same day. The intent is to break a Guinness world record. 110,000 is the record, and we are shooting for 350,000 this year.”
Shikellamy JROTC member Zachary Gross explained the race, “It’s going to start at the Shikellamy High School football field. We are going to run around and end up back at the field.”
Fellow member Halia VanKirk said, “For the race, it is $9 for middle school students and older, and $3 for children. After the 5K we are having a half mile kid’s fun run for all children under middle school age.”
The JROTC anniversary run is coming up April 25. Registration is at 9:00a.m. and the race kicks off at noon. You can learn more about the event by searching JROTC 5K Run – Sunbury, Pa on Facebook. You can also register at JROTC5Krun.com. (Codi Jade)
