Jesse C. Woodring
January 26, 1936 – November 19, 2018
Jesse C. Woodring, 82, of Sunbury, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, Nov. 19, 2018, surrounded by his family.
He was born Jan. 26, 1936, a son of the late Jesse C. II and Marion (Foust) Woodring of Tyrone.
He lost his father at age 6 and at 8 years old he was sent to Girard College in Philadelphia, a private all boys orphaned school. He had always felt a great pride and privilege in attending Girard and credits much of his work ethic and community service initiative to the formative years spent there under the guidance of his teachers and founder, Stephen Girard.
In 1954, he enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1958. He was very proud to serve his country. In 1962, he moved to Sunbury.
He was employed from 1958-1968 at Budget Plan Cos., from 1968-1976 at Geisinger Medical Center, and from 1976-1978 at Credit Bureau of Central Pa. He founded Central Credit Audit Inc. in 1978, Statewide Tax Recovery Inc. in 1980, Woodring Assoc. LP and Ashwood LLC, and retired in 1999.
Jesse’s memberships and honors include: Mayor, City of Sunbury from 2006-2009, recipient of City of Harrisburg Award for Distinguished Public Service in 2009, recipient of Mormon Distinguished Leadership Award for Preservation of Family Values in 2009, past chairman of Sunbury Parks and Recreation Commission, past chairman of Sunbury Redevelopment Authority, former vice chairman of Sunbury Historical Architectural Review Board, former associate board member of Northern Central Bank/Keystone Financial Bank, past board member of Pennsylvania collectors Association, past national board member of American Guild of Patient Account Managers, past president and charter member of Keystone Chapter of AGPAM, past president of Sunbury Rotary Club, president and chairman of the board of Sunbury Community Hospital Corp from 1999-2002, recipient of Sunbury Community Hospital’s Mary M. Packer Award in 2003, vice chairman of of CHS Sunbury Community Hospital Board from 2005-2014, chairman of CHS Sunbury Community Hospital Board in 2015, past chairman and charter member of Sunbury Pride and Renaissance Coalition, former board member of Sunbury-Northumberland Community Foundation, former board member of Central Susquehanna Health Alliance, former board member of Sunbury Revitalization Inc., member of F&AM Lodge No. 22, Past Master of Maclay Lodge No. 632 F&AM, trustee of Lodge No. 22 from 1995-2002, Royal Arch Chapter, board member and former chairman of Sunbury Area Community Foundation, a life member of American Legion Post 201, recipient of American Legion Post 201 Citizen of the Year Award in 2004, life member of Girard College Alumni, life member of Northumberland County Historical Society, member of the Sunbury Elks Club, member of Northumberland-Point Township Rod and Gun Club, a life member of the East End Hose Co., life member of Sunbury VFW Post 1532. the National Rifle Assoc., TPA Post U, and a former board member of Central Susquehanna Community Foundation.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, P. Maxine Woodring; three daughters, Karen Michael of Northumberland, Cheryl (Dave) Mertz of Sunbury, and April (Jack) Trego of Morgantown; one son, Donald C. Woodring of Philadelphia; 12 grandchildren, Wes and Melissa Michaels, Elyse and Laura Rice, Clark and Patrick Woodring, Brooke, Bradley and Dylan Woodring, Alexis Trego Plank and Jack and Samuel Trego; two stepgranddaughters, Rachael and Rebekah Mertz; three great-grandchildren, Jordan Rice, Ryleigh Hewlett and Oliver Bingaman; and two sisters, Beverly Southwell of Tyrone and Judith Brown of Alexandria, Pa..
He was preceded in death by his son, David A. Woodring of Sunbury.
His family was his greatest joy and they were his most prized possessions.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, and from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, followed by the funeral at noon, at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Front Street, Sunbury.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jesse’s honor may be made to VFW Post 1532, American Legion Post 201, or Mostly Mutts, Sunbury, PA.
