IRS warns of fake tax bills

scam FEAT

SUNBURY — The Internal Revenue Service and its Security Summit partners are alerting taxpayers to be on guard against fake tax bills. The IRS has received numerous reports around the country of scammers sending a fraudulent version of CP2000 notices for the 2015 tax year.

The scam involves an email that includes the fake notice as an attachment, requesting taxpayers to mail a check to an Austin, Texas address. The IRS says the CP2000 is commonly mailed to taxpayers through the postal service. It is never sent as part of an email.

The issue has been reported to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration for investigation. The IRS says any taxpayers or tax professionals who receive a scam email should not open it and instead, delete it from their email account.
