SHAMOKIN – Teachers in the Shamokin Area School District are expected to return to work next Thursday. Tony Michetti handles contract negotiations for the district and tells us the Pennsylvania Department of Education will file for injunctive relief to send teachers back to class.
The hearing is planned for Wednesday February 3 at 1:15 p.m. in Northumberland County Court. The Shamokin Area Education Association leaders already planned to return to the classroom February 4, regardless of the injunction filing. Michetti says contract negotiations would then be handled with court supervision. The teachers have been on strike since January 20 after the school board rejected an arbitrators report.
