LEWISBURG – Hand-carved ice sculptures, a 5K race, a chocolate tour and a plunge in the Susquehanna River…just some of the events that are part of the annual Heart of Lewisburg Ice Festival Friday and Saturday. Linda Sterling is executive director of the Lewisburg Downtown Partnership and says the ice sculpting will begin around 1 p.m. Friday afternoon in the downtown.
Sterling explained, “The ones that you see up and down the street actually get carved in an ice house in Latrobe, so that they have more time to do them. They carve the bigger sculptures on site. We have two that will be carved on site this year. There is going to be a bear throne carved in Hufnagle Park and there’s the Bison that we have each year in front of the post office, sponsored by Bucknell.”
Sterling says there is also a new event this year, taking place on Friday night. It’s the Polar Bear Pub Crawl to benefit the Lewisburg Downtown Partnership. Those who want to take part can meet at the polar bear ice sculpture in Hufnagle Park between 6 and 7 p.m. to receive their pub crawl hat and passport for $20.
Sterling said, “There are six participating pubs and you can visit them wearing your polar bear hat and look at the ice sculptures. We are enhancing the experience.”
