SELINSGROVE – The Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way helps fund…a meal, and a lifeline for many people. There are hundreds of residents who are homebound and need assistance in The Valley. Selinsgrove Meals on Wheels board president Art Montgomery says these people rely on them for five hot meals a week, prepared with their dietary needs in mind.
Montgomery said, “We did some research and found that there are around 700 homebound persons within our service area, which is the Selinsgrove Area School District. In an age where people are becoming more and more isolated, you know out of sight, out of mind, some people live very isolated lives. They can’t drive, can’t get out to get food and many of them are physically unable to make the preparation of their meals.”
And Montgomery says the Meals on Wheels drivers are local heroes, “Our very caring compassionate drivers spend time with these people and we have had opportunity to enter homes and find people who have fallen, who have actually been in the tub and can’t get out, so we have been in those emergency situations.”
Meals on Wheels is just one of the more than 30 agencies that rely on funding from the Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way, so they can continue their mission of feeding those who need help.
