How to keep downtowns thriving in The Valley

SUNBURY – Downtown businesses can come and go, with ups and downs in most communities.  Linda Sterling is executive director of the Lewisburg Downtown Partnership and says all downtowns face challenges at some point.

Sterling explained, “There tends to be peaks and valleys in all downtowns.  Right now, Lewisburg is struggling with the loss of CVS downtown.  We are really missing that foot traffic.  We are touching base with businesses just to see how things are going.  We are doing just a little extra to keep us over that hump.”

Jim Wilson, executive director of the Danville Business Alliance, agrees, “Right now Danville is certainly on the upswing.  We certainly have our challenges in terms of business diversity and business growth, trying to attract more residents downtown and infrastructure improvements.  They are largely the borough’s responsibility, but something that the business community is highly interested in seeing, which relates to budget and taxes.  So, there are a lot of things that are intertwined.”

Sterling and Wilson are promoting Small Business Saturday this Saturday, which is an effort by the Susquehanna River Valley Visitors Bureau to get more people shopping local to support the local economy.  You can find out more at www.visitcentralpa.org.  You can hear more from Sterling and Wilson from WKOK Sunrise online at www.wkok.com.
