SCRANTON – Geisinger Health System is expanding its commitment to medical education. It was announced Wednesday that Geisinger will acquire Scranton-based The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC).
TCMC is one of the nation’s newest fully accredited medical colleges, offering a community-based model of medical education at four regional campuses. The new school will be known as The Geisinger Commonwealth College of Medicine. It will retain its regional campus model and Geisinger’s academic programs, including its residency training, will be integrated under the college.
Dr. David Feinberg, Geisinger president and CEO, said the new alliance will “offer medical students a fully integrated learning experience while filling a tremendous need for physicians in the regions we serve.”
Employees of TCMC will become employees of Geisinger. The integration process is expected to span several months. (Alex Reichenbach/Jennifer Wakeman)
