DANVILLE — The outgoing head of Geisinger Health System has received an award from the American Hospital Association. Dr. Glenn Steele is the 2015 recipient of the Justin Ford Kimball Innovators Award.
The award recognizes people or organizations that have developed an influential, innovative approach to health care. Steele sees the award as a culmination of twelve years of good work at Geisinger, “Our ability to show what you can do with a fundamental re-engineering of how care is given…I think that caught the imagination of the nation and it came at a time when people were looking for different models of caregiving.”
The Geisinger model has been nationally recognized as an innovative, efficient method of delivering health care. Steele says the implementation of the new system was a team effort, “I think I was the cheerleader. I think I was the visionary. Everybody else did the hard work and I think it’s paid off.”
Steele will step down as Geisinger’s President and CEO in June. He sat down with WKOK’s Mark Lawrence and you can watch the extended interview above. (Jennifer Wakeman)
