Former teacher gets 2-5 years in prison

court-hammer-gavel1SUNBURY — A former teacher who hit a group of students with his vehicle while intoxicated will spend 2-5 years in a state correctional facility. Victor Swaboski III of Mount Carmel was sentenced Monday in Northumberland County Court.

Judge Charles Saylor said the former Shamokin Elementary School teacher had a blood alcohol content of .225 in March 2012 when he drove his vehicle into a group of five students. The students were seriously injured.

Four of the five victims were in court Monday. A parent of one of the victims addressed the court saying that because of Swaboski’s actions, his son has steel plates and screws in his body and that is probably going to prevent him from having a future in the military.

Swaboski addressed the court and the victims saying that he wants to apologize for all the physical and emotional pain that he has caused. He called his behavior reckless and said he couldn’t be more sorry.

Judge Saylor sentenced Swaboski 2-5 years in a state correctional facility followed by three years probation. Swaboski will receive credit for time served in jail, which is 28 days. (Sara Bartlett)
