LEWISBURG – More than 100 flags will be flying in time for Memorial Day in Lewisburg as part of the Flags for Heroes project. The effort is organized by the Lewisburg Sunrise Rotary Club and member Swan Stull, who saw the Flags for Heroes in another community while traveling and wanted to bring it to the region.
Stull said, “We talked to the Country Cupboard. They said, sure you can dig holes in our front lawn and put your flags up. And then we proceeded to sell sponsorships to these flags for heroes. Heroes are personal heroes, heroes in your family, service members and anybody who has made a difference in your life.”
Stull says many people are amazed by the display, “So the first year, which was 2014, we had 120 flags flying and we hope to have at least 150 this year. Country Cupboard had so many people pull off the road when they were first put up and ask about them. They had phone calls and people dropping in. We did too. It was stirring. It was moving.”
Businesses and individuals pay $50 to sponsor a flag in honor of someone. You can visit their website at www.lewisburgsunriserotarypa.com to find out more and to download a purchase form.
