Event tonight on Pennsylvania Courts elections

progressivesLEWISBURG- Find out the importance of the upcoming elections for Pennsylvania’s Courts. The Susquehanna Valley Progressives is holding an informational event tomorrow night at Union County Library in Lewisburg. Anyone who attends will find out the candidates for the upcoming election. Everyone will also learn the responsibilities of each position. Guest speakers for the event include Susanne Almita of the Pennsylvania Modern Courts, John Child of the General Council for the PA Enviromental Defense Foundation, and Chip Faka, from Keystone Progress in Lewisburg.

Nicole Faraguna, member of the Steering Committee of the Susquehanna Valley Progressives, “We also have three statewide judicial elections. So we have a seat open in the commonwealth court, we have a seat open in the superior court, and a historical election in that we have three seats open in the Supreme Court, and we haven’t had this many vacancies on the Supreme Court since 1704.”

Farguna reminds voters these judicial elections will affect the commonwealth for decades, “These are 10 year terms. Once they’re on, they stay on for decades because you have a retention vote which often means that people just keep the person already on the court. So these are people who have influence on laws that are being written, laws that have been written, that will be tried in the courts.”
