SUNBURY– A Northumberland County man was the victim of a scam attempt from the non-existant ‘Process Service Department of Northumberland County’ and a company called Joseph & Associates based in California.
The Milton resident told the DA’s office that he got numerous calls from the saying they had an important legal document to serve and asked him to call back for more information. When the man finally called the number back the man on the phone said he was from Joseph & Associates and that they were trying to collect a debt of $2,518. They said the debt stemmed from an unpaid credit card. A later phone call went to the man’s place of employment saying if he did not cooperate he could be detained. He did not return anymore phone calls.
The DA’s office says this scam involves the use of well written, authentic-looking notices on official company letterhead with dates, case numbers, and account numbers. Residents are advised that phone calls threatening to detain, arrest, or incarcerate people for unpaid debts are indicators of a scam attempt.
