Duke Street project on delay with another project on the way

NORTHUMBERLAND— PennDOT is working to get back on schedule with the Duke Street Reconstruction project after running into some issues. Representatives from PennDOT brought an update to the Northumberland Borough Council Tuesday night.

Mindy Foresman, PennDOT Transportation Construction Manager says crews will be back to work on Front Street in two weeks, “We have addressed the issue to get water across Front Street at Sheetz Avenue but we still have a couple places to look at before we can actually get started completely on the rest of Front Street.”

She says they hope to have the Fifth phase of Duke Street completed by Pineknotter Days. They also announced another project starting in late June will be to remove the walkway from under the railroad bridge on Water Street. Foresman says, “ We are going to be pulling the sidewalk off so we will be able to make the turning lanes wider and longer.  Right now you can only fit so many cars in the turn lane, we are going to make that turn lane longer by pulling that sidewalk off.”

When work begins on this project Route 11 will be down to one lane going south. All northbound traffic wishing to enter Northumberland must go Route 147 through Sunbury and over the Island. That project will be up for bid Thursday. All work on the Duke Street Project will stop for the week of Pineknotter Days July 2 -July 6. ( Sarah Benek)
