Tragedy: Inspiring Delaney Farrell obit leads to addiction conversation

SELINSGROVE— A young woman’s real life struggle with drug addiction—in her own words. That’s what is outlined in an obituary for a young Valley woman who died of a drug overdose this week.

The affects of the drug epidemic continue to hit as Delany Marie Farrell was found dead Saturday at a Red Roof Inn in Williamsport at the age of 23 of an apparent heroin overdose. In the obituary posted on DailyItem.com contains one of Delany’s last journal entries about suffering through drug addiction.

Her story like the story of many drug addicts wrapped up in the opioid crisis, is a story filled with pain and regret. Keri Albright, a Lewisburg resident contacted by WKOK tells us that she sees Delany’s story as a call to action, “I just had a profound emotional reaction and just starting crying and weeping, and thought ‘what can I do to help.’ I immediately went online and gave a little bit of money to United Way’s efforts to work on this issue.”

Albright, who doesn’t know Delany Farrell, felt compelled to reach out to her community on social media, “I know from doing community building work that people aren’t often moved to do something until they are emotionally inspired.”

The opioid epidemic may have desensitized us to what addicts are actually going through. Delany’s last journal entries, shed a light on the suffering she endured at the hands of drug addiction.

Albright says even though she doesn’t know Delany Farrell, she knows a girl like her, “I think that’s why I had such a strong reaction is because I know a girl just like Delany. I think we all know a girl just like Delany, and I think it’s important that we don’t just turn our heads and we don’t just say ‘oh, we hope she’s ok.’”

Friends and relatives are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the V.L. Seebold Funeral home, 601 N. High St., Selinsgrove, followed by a celebration of life service at 4.
