
UPDATE: Two deaths are confirmed after a three-alarm fire in Sunbury was cleared at 8:45 p.m. Saturday. Sunbury Assistant Fire Chief Jay Long said a rooftop rescue saved one resident from the flames. Several county firewire Facebook pages indicate children were trapped on the second floor of one of the Walnut Street homes, but police are not releasing any further details at this time.
SUNBURY – Two people are dead after a three-alarm house fire in Sunbury Saturday afternoon.
Sunbury Police Chief Brad Hare says two fatalities have been reported due to the blaze. No names and ages are known yet, and its also unknown if any criminal activity was involved. Hare says the Northumberland County Coroner’s Office and state police fire marshal are at the scene investigating. No other injuries have been reported.
Dozens of fire crews from multiple counties responded to the fire just before 4 p.m. at 330, 334, and 340 Walnut Street. The 911 center says a third alarm was dispatched within 15 minutes of the initial call.
Two adjacent homes had flames and smoke visible upon firefighters arrival. Entrapment was also reported initially.
Its unknown when the scene will be cleared. Currently, multiple streets around the scene remain closed – Second and Walnut to Fourth and Walnut Streets, along with Third and Chestnut to Linden Street and Church to Spruce Streets.
