Donkey basketball returns to Shikellamy High School

"Shikellamy's Rebecca Krieger tries to pull her donkey to get to the ball during Tuesday's Donkey Basketball game at Shikellamy High School."

SUNBURY — Donkey basketball will take place at Shikellamy High School once again. This game will help benefit two worthy causes.

Organizer Slade Shreck describes the event, “We will be having a donkey basketball game to benefit the Spreading Antlers children foundation’s swim program and Miles for Macy. This game, we’ll have the Shikellamy students against Shamokin and Line Mountain students.”

Shreck says Spreading Antlers is always looking for help in supporting the community’s children, “Spreading Antlers is a children’s foundation that got started several years ago. We have a small group, small board. We’re always looking for volunteers and always looking for people to come onboard. We do a lot of activities for youth and for the children.”

Proceeds from Saturday’s game will help benefit Miles for Macy, a fund to help a well-known teacher in the Shikellamy School District. Macy Minnier was diagnosed with ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, earlier this year. Shreck says he is happy to help the cause, “There are just a lot of costs involved because as everyone knows, ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease has no cure. It’s very unfortunate. He is a great teacher, a great man. He’s done a lot for so many students at Shikellamy. This is just another way to give back to someone that’s in need.”

The donkey basketball will be played this Saturday, October 22 at the Shikellamy High School. Doors open at 5:30 and the game will begin at 6:30. Tickets can be purchased at the high school for $6.00 in advance and $8.00 at the door. Children five and younger are free.
