Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Transitions hosting event

SUNBURY – With the #metoo movement growing every day, and laws being debating and voted on in PA, awareness of domestic violence has been growing at a rapid rate.

Heather Shnyder, education specialist at Transitions of PA, says domestic violence is now coming to the forefront of the public eye, “We’re starting to engage in conversations about the various movements that are out there, domestic violence, sexual assault, being a victim of crime, and we’re starting to understand it. There are people now that this is no longer something that happens behind closed doors.”

With the signing of a new law in PA designed to help victims of domestic violence, and domestic and sexual abuse stories in the news seemingly every day, Shnyder says people are starting to see the impact of domestic violence, “People are starting to get it. They understand the impact that domestic violence has on families, on communities; how it affects businesses, organizations. It’s just something that we need to really understand and really need to address.”

Transitions of PA will be having an event on Saturday, October 27. It’s the “Walk for No More” one mile walk through Lewisburg, “We’ve created an environment in downtown Lewisburg where several area businesses have agreed to allow us to build selfie stations, and then through the course of travelling from station to station, individuals will get a glimpse, and get information into when a victim is in an abusive relationship.”

Throughout the walk, selfies can be taken at each station and then be uploaded as an album to Transitions FaceBook page. The “Walk for No More” event will kick off at Hufnagle Park 11am with registration starting at 10am. There will be food, speakers, and entertainment for all ages.
