Dieticians: Easter can be healthy

easter bunnySUNBURY — The Easter bunny isn’t always worried about leaving healthy snacks — but local dieticians say a basket doesn’t need to be filled with candy.  Erin Long is a registered dietician at Weis Markets.  She says there are plenty of non-food options.

“Kids are all about quantity.  They like to see a lot of stuff in the basket.  A great way to do this is to create theme baskets.  You could make a sports basket, themed around soccer, baseball, basketball, football.  Put a lot of sports-themed goodies in it.  You could make a summer basket, with a beach towel, frisbee, sandbox toys, goggles, kites.  You could still include come candy, but just don’t overload it with candy.”

Fellow dietician Kathryn Long adds that Easter dinner doesn’t need to be a giant feast.  “Don’t go into the meal really, really starving.  If you are really hungry, you’re more likely to overeat — and you probably won’t be overeating the asparagus.  You’ll probably overeat the other things.  So have a good balanced breakfast that morning, just so you’re not overly hungry when the meal time comes.”

The dieticians recommend trying to get outside and take a walk after your meal.  They were guests on WKOK Sunrise Wednesday morning.  You can hear more healthy tips here.  (Codi Jade)
