SUNBURY – Some members of the Wolf administration came to Sunbury last week to see – in person—the Sunbury fabridam project. Cindy Adams Dunn, the DCNR secretary, said while hurricanes were devasting parts of the globe, our Valley was spared, “If a hurricane had come up the Susquehanna and raised the water level, we would’ve had to shut the project down immediately. Turns out, we escaped tropical storms and hurricanes. The project is near completion.”

In fact, The Valley has experienced very little rain fall in the past 30 days. According to the National Weather Service, our entire area has a three-inch rain fall deficit, which has affected the river level.

But no matter the conditions, Dunn is confident in what the skilled crew at Shikellamy State park brings to the table, “I think it’s really an example of government that works when you have people of this caliber who want to work and take care of parks for visitors. But in this particular park, that means something a lot more than mowing and cleaning up the bathrooms. It means replacing humungous bags and in the biggest dam in the country.”

Crews have been replacing bag one and seven on the dam since late August. The nearly $900,000 project should be fully finished within the next two weeks. (Matt Catrillo)
