SUNBURY — The public is being warned about a phone scam. Northumberland County District Attorney Ann Targonski says another “IRS Tax Scheme” was reported Wednesday. She says a Coal Township woman received a phone message from someone identifying himself as Officer Jason Miller of the Internal Revenue Service.
She was told the IRS possessed strong evidence that she had committed the crime of “Fraud” and “Theft by Deception” between 2000 and 2013. The man told her the IRS was about to imprison her and freeze all of her bank accounts and assets, including the taking of her home, unless she paid a $2,187 fine.
The victim was told she needed to go to a store that offers “reload” cards. The woman followed his step by step instructions and loaded the card with money. She also proceeded to borrow money from her mother’s whole life insurance policy.
When the victim attempted to call the numbers back later they were disconnected. The victim suffered a loss of over $4,000. Targonski says two additional phone scams were also reported Wednesday. (Codi Jade)
