DA: Engaged community can stop crime

piecuchSELINSGROVE — Following an outburst of crime across The Valley, a local district attorney says the community needs to band together.  Snyder County D.A. Mike Piecuch says there are things people can do to try to burglar-proof their home.

“People should look at their homes and find ways to make visibility better,” Piecuch said.  “Whether it’s motion sensor lighting and trimming brushes and shrubs away from windows and access points.  You can do little things like keeping doors and windows locked at night and when you go away.  If you’re going away, you should let a trusted neighbor or friend know so they can check on your property.  Don’t advertise that you are going away on social media — that is a mistake a lot of people make.”

As far as little league field burglaries, Piecuch says we need to make them less rewarding for thieves, “My advice is that we have to keep as little inventory and as little cash as possible to make them a low-reward target.  They are very vulnerable because there may not be a lot of people there when there is not a game going on.  My best advice is to be sure that we empty out the concession stands and put a note on the door that says there is no money stored there.”

Piecuch said we need to send the message out that the community is engaged and we are working with law enforcement.  Piecuch reminds everyone that Snyder County Night Out is coming up August 25 at East Snyder Park.  (Codi Jade)
