SHAMOKIN DAM – Work will begin soon on the former Sunbury Generation plant in Shamokin Dam. Panda Power Funds announced Wednesday they have arranged $710 million in financing for the 1,124 megawatt gas fired power plant. Panda says the coal-to-gas conversion of the Hummel Station plant will be one of the largest in the country.

In a statement, Panda estimates 900 jobs will be created to construct the power plant. Bechtel Power Corporation will handle engineering and procurement for the plant. Siemens Energy will provide the power island including natural gas and steam turbines.

There will be approximately 35 jobs created to run the new facility which is expected to go online in 2018. The station is located in a 192-acre Keystone Opportunity Expansion Zone.  (Jennifer Wakeman)
