Construction moving along for new North’d Co. Prison

SUNBURY – The new Northumberland County prison construction is moving along, and officials are getting ahead on other planning.

County Commissioner Sam Schiccitano says the foundation for the secure part of the prison is in place and flooring is ready to be laid, “We’re hoping during the month of March, all the pre-cast cells will be in place so that by our first snow fall, we can have a secure roof over the property.”

Schiccitano also says a committee has been formed to prepare all the needs of the new prison.

The committee includes Schiccitano and Commissioner Rick Shoch, the sheriff and warden, probation personnel, business personnel from the controller’s office, and Northumberland County Court Administrator Kevin O’Hearn, “To work on staffing so we can come up with a staffing plan that is not only safe, but economical for the county. We’re also going to be working on the transportation issue of how the inmates will be transported and how to reduce and limit that cost.”

The committee will also look for bids on food supplies, telephones, and more. The new prison will house 186 inmates. (Matt Catrillo)
