Commissioners want more data on prison site costs

northumberland commishSUNBURY – No decision yet about the location of the new Northumberland County prison. Commissioners met Tuesday with county controller Chris Grayson and project managers to discuss the situation with the former Celotex site.

Commissioner Sam Schiccatano tells WKOK the meeting was scheduled last week when they became aware of a potential lawsuit from contractor James T. O’Hara, Inc. The company was contracted to do site work at the Celotex location, but says they received no communication from the county to cancel the contract and may now make a claim for the $3.49 million of the contract.

On Friday, commissioner Kymberley Best held a press conference to air her concerns about the potential cost increases at the Northwestern Academy site as well as expenses related to the Celotex property. She said the county has spent $11 million and still has no prison.

Commissioner Rick Shoch disputes Best’s figures and Schiccatano said after Tuesday’s meeting that they would gather more data before making any decisions. The purchase of the Northwestern Academy property is set be completed June 30.
