Clubhouse helping those with mental illness

sunriseSUNBURY — You may not realize how important it is to work — but at the Mental Health Workabilities Clubhouse, they know that work can change a person’s life.  Terry Burke says the goal is to help those with mental illness to be successful.

“There is work that needs to be done throughout the day at the clubhouse.  That is how you get that idea of I have a place to be.  I have a purpose.  I am contributing to something and I could contribute to something more,” Burke said.  “Work is vital to mental health recovery, everything that goes along with it.  The self-esteem, the contributing to a team and the bonus is that they get a paycheck too.  It’s pretty cool.”

Burke says the clubhouse always welcomes help from the community, “We’ll be more than happy to take donations.  If we get in touch with you, don’t judge us by our disability.  Give us the opportunity to work for you.  We really can do anything.  If you’re an employer and there is some work at your office that is falling through the cracks, think about us.  We can do a lot.  Listen to us and realize that we have a lot to offer, not just as a club but as individuals.”

The workability members will be helping to staff the upcoming 5K walk in conjunction with Nottingham Village Senior Living Community. You can learn more about the Mental Health Workabilities Clubhouse and the 5K by listening to Tuesday’s WKOK Sunrise program.  (Codi Jade)
