City suspends K-9 unit

Sunbury City Council meeting k-9 suspended Beth Kremer, Mayor David Persing, Terry Specht, Jim Eister and ReichnerSUNBURY— The Sunbury City Council announced at their meeting Monday night that the police department K-9 unit will be suspended, effective immediately.

Mayor, David Persing has questions as to what the K-9 unit has been doing saying, “I’ve been trying to get some facts and figures together from the K-9  for the past six months. I don’t seem to be able to get that from my department. We just need to sit down and evaluate the whole program.”

There was only one K-9 in the program, and the unit was not paid for with tax dollars.

The Mayor also announced that the city will be bringing in a professional team to revamp the police department saying, “We are going to update all of what they call the standard operating system of the police department, plus there is the regulatory rules and regulations as to how you do things, these haven’t been done since the early 2000’s. Now that we are revamping the entire police department and making so many changes we are going to start from the top and work down as I  look for this new chief at the same time.”

The decision on the part-time police chief position will be made after the major changes in the police department are complete. (Sarah Benek )
