SUNBURY – Shikellamy School District will officially need to pay the City of Sunbury over $27,000 in permitting fees for its new stadium project. During Monday night’s city council meeting, council members did not second a motion by Mayor Josh Brosious to waive the fees.
Brosious told WKOK the reasoning’s on why he made the motion of waving the fees.
“The reason for wanting to wave the fees is to save tax payer dollars. I know it’s a school district, but our citizens pay school district tax dollars. It wouldn’t cost the city of Sunbury any more; it was money we never had.”
City councilman John Barnhart was the most vocal against the motion claiming Mayor Brosious was acting in self-interest because of his employment at Shikellamy; as such, Brosious abstained from voting.
“For myself to abstain from a vote, it comes down to getting a financial gain or a family member benefiting from this. I got neither,” said Brosious.
Barnhart also mentioned the taxes for the district fees would also cover other towns and townships other than Sunbury.
Shikellamy School Board Director Slade Shreck then told council the check is coming in and the school district is ready to pay the fee.
The fees have been due since June.
Council also says the district must pay any additional fees that may come with construction increases and if additional items are subject to inspection.
