SUNBURY — Trees are marked for removal on Chestnut Street in Sunbury, but the city isn’t quite sure when they’ll be removed.

Cheryl Delsite of the city clerk’s office said, “We are at the mercy of the weather at this point.  We planned to have the trees cut this week, but then the snow came.  We are still waiting to hear back from the contractor to decide when we can move forward with the tree cutting.”

Tree removal from Front Street to South 10th Street is the first step in the city’s Chestnut Street Project.  Delsite says when the trees are removed, there will be parking and slight traffic issues in the area, but traffic control will be set up to keep delays to a minimum.

Phase one of the project will consist of street paving, new sidewalk and curbs, water service and sewer laterals, gas service and tree work from Front Street to South Third Street.

The final public meeting on the Chestnut Street Rehabilitation Project is coming up Thursday on the second floor of City Hall at 7:00p.m.  The project engineer and representatives from contractor G & R Charles, and the city will be at the meeting.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

The  Chestnut Street Project is expected to cost around  $1.5 million, and will be paid for with a state grant, CDBG allocation, Liquid Fuels funds and city funds.  (Codi Jade)
