SUNBURY – The Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce is responding to Friday’s announcement that Bimbo Bakeries is closing its Sunbury facility.
Bob Garrett, president and CEO of the chamber says the closure is a blow to the area, “This is sad news, particularly for the 67 people who are receiving that news today.”
Garrett says the Chamber will do everything it can to support the displaced workers, “I think what the Chamber will do is work very carefully and closely with the HR representatives from the company, also with the Governor’s Action Team. What we’ll try to do is make this as soft a landing as we possibly can.”
He says there are employers looking for workers here in the Valley, “Folks that want to retrain and get other skills, we will do everything we can to get them in that training, get those skills so that they can come to work for some of the other industries that, frankly, are in a labor shortage with equally good paying, family sustaining jobs.”
Bimbo purchased the Holsum Butter-Krust bakeries in Sunbury and Northumberland in 2011. The Sunbury location will close at the end of January leaving 67 people without jobs.
