Bucknell management course more than just a lecture

LEWISBURG– Management 101 at Bucknell University is not your typical entry level college course. This intense class meets five days a week, and students create their own company, sell a product, and use the proceeds to fund a service project.

Sami Golaski, Senior accounting and financial management student spoke about her experience in Management 101, “Our mission was to promote reading and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities at the Head Start in Milton. We did a book drive and got over 250 books to donate to the kids to take home. It was very impactful  not only, I hope for the children, but for our company members as well.”

Each semester four classes of about twenty-five students each create and manage companies. Each company will usually operate with a budget of $1,000-$3,000 in order to deliver real services to clients and sell real products.

Missy Gutkowski, assistant director of  experimental programs at Bucknell University spoke about why this class is so successful, “Not only are they building this company and trying to work through it, they have great professors who are also teaching them various management theories, From conflict resolution to leadership development theories. It’s learning disciplines and theories they can actually apply in the classroom.”

In the past the Management 101 student work has benefitted many local non- profits and government agencies. You can learn more about Management 101 from Gutkowski and Golaski from thier WKOK Sunrise interview at WKOK.com.
