SHAMOKIN — The News Item reports he Eighth Street bridge crossing Shamokin Creek in the city is slated to be replaced.
The reinforced concrete T-beam superstructure was built in 1938.
“It has started to deteriorate,” Chuck Hopta, county engineer, said Thursday. “We want to replace it before it gets to the point that we have to post weight-limit restrictions.”
According to PennDOT, the project is expected to cost approximately $2.79 million, which includes final design, construction and utility work, over the next three years.
Hopta said the project is in the preliminary design phase, which could lead to changes.
The plans are available for review for the next two weeks at the Shamokin-Coal Township Public Library. Written comments will also be received.
Hopta anticipates that construction will take place in 2026.
