Board approved to move forward on $820,000 Kelly Elem project

LEWISBURG – An expensive repair at a Lewisburg school will take place next year. Floors are buckling at Kelly Elementary, so during Thursday’s public school board meeting, the Lewisburg board voted to seek bids for what they estimate will be a nearly million dollar project.

School Board President Kathy Swope, “Based on the information we were given at the last meeting, analyzing all the different options, this was the most affective option and it did what actually had to be done with the micro piles and protect from future problems of this type.”

Bidding for the project will begin in January 2019. The project is expected to begin in early June of 2019 and is expected to be completed in time for the start of the 2019-20 school year. Swope says it is still possible the start of the 2019-20 year could be delayed until after Labor Day.

She says that won’t be determined until the school calendar is set next February, “At that point, we’ll have a clearer understanding of what the timeline will look like for the actual construction because the bidding documents will have been put out and will actually probably delay the decision until after the bidding documents are returned and at that point, we will set the calendar for potential option for Kelly Elementary to start later.”

The floor damage is in the schools multi-purpose room and kitchen area, affecting 4,000 square feet. School officials have said all students and staff are safe.
