Bitcoin Scam Loses Snyder County Residents $19,000

WEST PERRY TOWNSHIP, SNYDER COUNTY – Two residents are out approximately $19,000 because of an online Bitcoin scam. Selinsgrove state police reported this week the incident occurred June 12.

Troopers say the scam artists posed as a government agency and the victims were instructed to purchase gift cards and transmit money via a Bitcoin ATM to avoid criminal prosecution.

Troopers note any legitimate government agency or entity would not instruct individuals to pay fines or avoid prosecution by making payments in the form of gift cards or crypto currencies.

The investigation is ongoing.
