Bestselling author delivers lecture on healthcare

verghese 1LEWISBURG – A bestselling author and physician spoke about harnessing technology to deliver humanistic healthcare. Dr. Abraham Verghese, author of Cutting for Stone, My Own Country, and The Tennis Partner, presented the 7th Annual Fasano Lecture to a capacity crowd Tuesday at Bucknell University.

Dr. Verghese’s lecture focused on his appreciation of technology but the need for traditional doctor/patient relationships. Verghese said, “Electronic medical records were designed for billing and become cumbersome when trying to be present with a patient – it’s getting better but we’re not quite there yet.”

Verghese added that the best way to understand a patient is by seeing the patient, not looking at a computer screen.

The lecture is held each year by Evangelical Community Hospital through gifts provided in memory of Charles P. Fasano, DO, who passed away in 2009.
